what really bothers me is the way we put wolves on a pedestal but treat coyotes like garbage. despite being closely related enough to frequently interbreed, wolves are regarded as noble, beautiful creatures while coyotes are trashy, dirty animals. coyotes have held on remarkably well despite the pressures we have put on them by destroying their habitats, they’re incredibly intelligent, and they’re equally as beautiful as wolves. i hate to do the whole “you can see the intelligence in their eyes!!” thing but you honestly can. i wish they got the appreciation they deserve
The fact that they’ve done so well surviving in our hellscape is exactly why people detest them so much. Same with dandelions, pigeons, prairie dogs, etc. As a society, we resent things that don’t die when we tell them to die, and we turn our own victims into martyrs. People cry crocodile tears over wolves and put them on a pedestal because they have proven comparatively fragile. As a species, our ego can’t handle anything strong enough to exist alongside us.
Humans do this really weird thing where we see creatures managing to survive amidst our garbage and destruction and conclude that they must be trashy to be living in it, but we don’t conclude that we ourselves much be even more trashy for having created it in the first fucking place.
